Dover Rowing Club had an outstanding home regatta taking six wins, the Senior Aggregate prize and sharing the Roger Cuff Memorial Sculling trophy. The first win came from the Open Senior Four which featured three Dover crews competing. Dover’s crews were Tom Stothart, Chris Hall, Will Coleman, Alex Nash coxed by Vanessa Ware, Nick Bailey, Lee Stampton, Paul Scrivener, Jon Cook coxed by Chris Price and Emily Harvey, Holly Hannington, Niki Leggatt, Ella Cook coxed by Fiona from Shoreham. The Ware coxed crew got the better start and were in an initial two boat battle with Herne Bay for the lead, gradually easing ahead. A well executed turn extended their lead allowing Ware’s crew to control the race to the line and gain their fourth win of the season and tying with Deal in the Open Senior Four Championship. The Price coxed crew were kept under pressure by Fiona’s crew pushing hard. After the turns the positions settled out with Price’s crew finishing fifth and Fiona’s crew finishing in sixth.
In the Women’s Novice Four Dover had two crews competing, Alex Henchy, Rhiannon Castree, Rosie Crosbie, Lily Stafford-Edwards coxed by Ware facing Evie Holland, Lucy Castree, Lee-Anne Finnis, Louise Fitzsimmons coxed by Stampton. Both crews had good starts but it was Ware’s crew that started to move to the head of the field. Pushing hard to the turn Ware guided them through a sharp turn allowing them to pull clear with an easy win over the finishing line. Stampton’s crew fought hard in the rough conditions coming home in tenth.
The third fours win came in the Open Mixed Four. Dover’s two crews were Stothart, Hall, Crosbie, Harvey coxed by Stampton competing against E Cook, Holland, Henry Cox, Sonny Varnes-Stone coxed by Bailey. Stampton’s crew erupted from the start and built an immediate lead, continuing to move away form the rest of the crews to the turn. A steady turn led to them controlling the run home leading to an easy win. The Bailey crew were fighting for a top six finish on the way out but would drop back to seventh at the finish.
There were some fantastic performances in the individual Sculls events, the club was particularly pleased with the performance of Scrivener in the Open Novice Sculls. Scrivener went hard off the line sculling purposefully on familiar waters. He soon established a significant lead and kept up the pace through the turn. Moving fluidly Scrivener would cross the line 50 seconds ahead of second place.
Leggatt raced in the Women’s Novice Sculls in a mixed field with the Women’s Junior Sculls. Leggatt has had a string of second places and was determined to win on home waters. A steady start allowed her to have the initiative over her Shoreham opponent. Leading towards the turn, Leggatt was being forced towards the shore by the Junior Shoreham sculler. Safely through the turn Leggatt faced her path blocked by the Junior Shoreham rower with the Novice Shoreham rower pressing from her outside. It was only in the last 200m that she was able to push out of the box and held over the line to secure her first win.
Open Junior Sculls saw Chris Hall hunting his fifth win of the season. Sculling strongly off the start Hall built a solid lead but came under pressure towards the turn by the young Shoreham Sculler. Hall nailed his turn and sprung clear of the field allowing him to pull clear and remain unbeaten in this category this season.
Open Senior Sculls saw Hall compete against Stothart. Both got a good start and were a little behind Herne Bay’s sculler. Out of the turns it was Hall then Stothart chasing Herne Bay. Both looked to be closing hard when Hall was stopped by a heavy wave which broke his charge. Quickly regathering himself Hall shot forward and was able to close to three lengths at the line, securing second a little ahead of Stothart in third.
In the J14 Mixed Quad Sculls Dover had two crews with Zara Meakins, Holly Dunham, Jess Clements, Noah Clear coxed by Stampton, and Erin Sanders, Holly Young, Hollie Castree, Riley Danko coxed by Coleman competing. Coleman’s crew got the better start and were closest to the leading Herne Bay with Stampton’s crew close behind. Coleman’s crew established a clear second place but could not catch the leading crew at the line, with Stampton’s crew in third.
In the Open J16 Open Sculls Cox, Oliver White, Jack Castree, Varnes-Stone coxed by Stampton would finish third. In the Women’s J16 Quad Sculls Young, H Castree, R Castree, E Cook coxed by Callam from Shoreham finished third and Sanders, Meakins, Clements, Dunham coxed by Coleman finished fifth.
The Women’s Junior Four had two crews competing with Z White, Henchy, Crosbie, Stafford-Edwards coxed by Ware and Fitzsimmons, Holland, Jo Matcham, L Castree coxed by Stampton. At the turns Ware’s crew were in third and Stampton’s eighth. Ware’s crew pushed hard, and set the better line, rowing through Shoreham to improve to second with Stampton finishing eighth.
Open Senior Pairs had Hall and Stothart getting a good start and they were fighting Deal to the turns. A missed turn cost the Dover crew will Deal pulling away. A late charge saw Dover’s crew hunting Deal down but they ran out of water finishing in second by two lengths.
Hannington and Leggatt competed in the Women’s Junior Pairs finishing in third place. In the Women’s Senior Pairs Hannington and Harvey had a good race turning in third but were unable to improve at the line.
Women’s Senior Fours saw E Cook, Ware, Hannington, Harvey coxed by Coleman get a good start and be in the mix at the turns. All crews were close with Dover turning in second. By the finish Herne Bay had just managed to pass Dover leaving them in third place at the line.
In the Open Novice Fours Dover had two crews Cox, O White, J Castree, Varnes-Stone coxed by Coleman and Chris Wong, Paul Scholes, Damion Napier, Rhiannon Castree coxed by Stampton. Following a good start for Coleman’s crew a miscommunication delayed them at the turn seeing them drop away from the leading two boats. A strong push failed to close down the gap leaving the crew in third. Stampton’s crew would finish in eighth.
For Women’s Double Sculls Dover had four crews with Harvey and Young the highest placed turning third and maintaining that position to the line. Z White and H Castree would come in fourth. Leggatt and Clements finished eighth with Hannington and Sanders in ninth.
Women’s Masters Four 40+ saw Debbie Thomas, Finnis, Z White, Leggatt coxed by Stampton put in a good performance coming home fourth. Open Masters Fours 50+ saw two crews competing, Scrivener, Stampton, Bailey, Leggatt coxed by Coleman and J Cook, Napier, Wong, Scholes coxed by E Cook. Coleman’s crew had the better of the conditions coming home fourth and Cook’s crew finishing seventh. In the Open Masters Four 40+ Matcham, Thomas, Fitzsimmons, Finnis coxed by Stampton finished sixth.
In the Open Junior-Senior Four Varnes-Stone, O White, J Castree, Cox were coxed by Harvey and would finish fourth. The same crew would compete in the Open Junior Fours coxed by Bailey finishing in eleventh.
Four Crews were entered in the Open Double Sculls. Hall and Danko finished eighth, Stothart and Clear finished ninth, J Castree and O White in tenth and Cox and Varnes were last over the line.
Following Ware getting the cox of the day at Bexhill regatta, it was Coleman’s turn at Dover to get cox of the day.
